Gardenia

Description

Gardenia is a bushy evergreen shrub, or small tree with dark glossy foliage. It grows 1-2 m tall is about 1 m in width and has large white, waxy flowers that are highly fragrant and sweetly-scented.

The deliciously perfumed flowers make good cutting flowers for a vase, but be careful - they mark easily if touched! If grown in a pot, they will survive to be taken indoors for a short period (about a week) during their flowering cycle.

Blooms in spring and summer.

Growing

Gardenias need a sheltered position and do well in all climates except very cold districts.

The soil should be lime-free, preferably acidic, well drained and rich. It is therefore recommended to feed monthly with acid plant food.

Prune back in winter if necessary.
