Description

Summer-flowering shrub for warm temperate and tropical climates.

Many species (mostly evergreen) and hundreds of named cultivates.

Magnificent large flowers (some to 20cm) range in colour from white through yellow, orange, pink, red and maroon. Flowering period is November to April.

Foliage consists of smooth dark green ovate leaves with toothed margins. There are evergreen as well as deciduous hibiscus, but those found in nurseries are usually evergreens due to the many magnificent hybrids that are sought after by gardeners. Sizes vary, some can reach 4 meters in height and more.

They tolerate somewhat salty air.

Growing

Sunny sheltered position. All species are susceptible to frost which can completely defoliate them. Pick a site with care as hibiscus have vigorous root systems and dislike being moved.

The soil should be rich, well drained and preferably slightly acidic. Do not plant in heavy clay.

Prune in early spring (to any shape desired) and follow up with complete fertiliser.

Make sure to mulch in the dry summer months to retain moisture.

Some varieties adapt to dry conditions and partial shade. H. heterophyllus and 'Apple Blossom' are two of them.
